not for the faint of heart

I am so excited to show you how the upstairs bathroom is coming along, but of course I forgot the memory card full of photos  at the cottage…so instead I will fuel the fires of suspense and present the horror show of  BEFORE images I do have with me…

Not so bad you say? That’s cause I have spared you the zoom.
Lets just say those planter pots filled with dirt were the cleanest things in this room.

Now it’s time to look up….waaaaaay up.

Yes this is a rusty ol capless  exhaust fan. Cracks and bad plaster patching aside, just check out the residue on that thar ceiling.  Apparently having a schmoke on the can was pretty common place.

Tired cultured marble vanity, check. Burnt out light-bulbs, check.  Missing tiles, check.   Dripping hot water tap, Wicked!

But wait dear reader, I have saved the best for last!

What do you think is worse, this avocado green tub…

or this rancid toilet and the surrounding floor and stained wall tiles…

And here is my tip for a job like this,

No matter how small your budget, or how cheap you are, this is one of those times to do a ‘dip to the hip’ and pay some hourly laborers to come in.   Relax, you will smile to yourself in the firm knowledge and assurance that that was the best hundred dollars you have ever spent with every disgusted cry coinciding perfectly  with every slosh of the toilet water as they carry the load down the stairs and out the door.  Good work homeowner!

All the best parties happen in the kitchen right?

Let me tell you the only party going on in here was the demolition party we whipped up once we got the keys.  Blech.

Bring on the party supplies!

  • big ol box of rubber gloves
  • safety goggles
  • dust mask
  • scrub brush
  • bucket
  • bag o rags
  • gallons and gallons of Swish Cleaning supplies
  • crowbar
  • contractor garbage bags
  • ghetto blaster
  • block rocking beats

All joking aside, if you are going to start cleaning you need to protect yourself from getting that crud all over, and even worse, in you.  There are no words for the horrors that lurk in the nooks and crannies of a rooming house.

I suggest using Swish Miracle Detergent Disinfectant Cleaner.  Besides being super effective at breaking down dirt and grime, it’s a hospital grade Anti-Infective.   God only knows what’s festering in here, last thing we need to worry about is picking up some Hep-C or a staph infection.  double blech.

Strap on the rubber, fire up the tunes and get yer scrub on!

Crazytown, pop. 2

It’s official, Dale and I are insane…

Sure we have full time jobs,  our city house is in mid renovation state, and just for good measure we’ve also taken on a not quite finished 1920’s lakeside cottage with it’s share of extensive repairs.  Sure every min of our lives are already packed with trips to Home Depot, trolling local Re-Stores and optimistically attending auctions.  Sure we would like to relax and do normal people stuff;  you know like watching TV, walking the dogs in the park, going to the beach, and dream a little dream… perhaps even looking in shops that don’t carry power tools!

So how did we find ourselves with yet another fixer upper?   Continue reading
